Suggestions for fixing Microsoft Word when its not working properly:

Hi Bill:

By "lots of memory" you mean at least 48 MB?  Great.  If not, you're still

too low.  And I assume you have virtual memory ON?

OK, I suspect it's a bad preference file, but let's eliminate the

possibilities one by one.  Don't assume that the re-installation replaced

all the bad files: re-install is programmed to leave certain files unchanged

in case you have anything valuable saved in them.  We'll get to that...

1)  Did you recently install Office Service Release 1 for Office 2001?  If

so: that's the culprit.  If you renamed or moved any components before

installing SR-1, you get a "partial" upgrade and crash on start-up is the

classic symptom.  Sorry:  The cure is a bit drastic:  You need to download

and run the Office Remover from the MacTopia website.  The one on the CD is

out of date, it won't do the job.  Now rebuild the desktop.  This gets rid

of any "missed" files that weren't updated.

Now you need to re-install Office 2001, this time accepting all the

defaults.  Don't change ANYTHING, and do a complete install.  Now start each

application once and exit, to force it to initialise itself.

Now rebuild your desktop.  NOW you can run the SR-1 patch (and you must: it

has lots of fixes over and above the advertised ones).

Now start each application once again.  And if you want to be sure, rebuild

the desktop again...

Should be fixed now.

2)  If it wasn't the Partial Patch problem, you next need to check you do

not have Epson's PICTify 1.5 installed.  If you have, update it: 1.5 is not

compatible with MS Office 2001.

3) If you've got down here and you still have the problem, close Word and

rename your Normal template.  Better?  We are now dealing with files

re-installation preserves because they contain valuable settings.

4)  Close Word and rename the Word Settings 9 file.  Sorry:  You will have

to reset all your preferences.  Better?

5)  Close Word and rename the PPC Registration Database.  This causes quite

a few settings to be lost.  Word should start up pretty much as it first

came out of the box.  Better yet?

If not, please post back here.  There are some other things we can try.

Hope this helps
